Bordeaux

Last night we gathered at TP's gorgeous new house to taste a little wine! The theme for our January tasting was Bordeaux. We ended up tasting 4 different wines because we ended up with two of the same. Three bottles of red and one bottle of white.

Barton & Guestier Bordeaux 2005
Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
Flavors of citrus, black-currant buds and a note of vanilla. Sleek and round texture with a long and refreshing finish. Aged in oak. {BS's selection}

Chateau Greysac Medoc 2004
The characteristic style of Greysac is one of great aromatic finesse combined with good, full body. This complementarity produces wines with straightforward, clean flavors and sumptuous fruit which acquire elegance and complexity over time. $11 {LS's selection}

Chateau Jacquet De La Grave 2005
Intense purple color. Attractive nose with hints of cherries and currants, evolving into menthol. The wine is supple with a robust and fleshy mouth. Finish characterized by well rounded tannins and notes of red fruits. $16 {TB's selection}

Baron Philippe De Rothschild Mouton Cadet 2007
Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Cabernet Franc (15%)
Deep garnet color. Highly expressive black fruit at first, especially blackberry, with touches of toast and fine spice, then more complex fresh fruit aromas, especially cherry and red currant. $11 {MC & AB's selection}

  • The favorite of the night seemed to be the Medoc Chateau Greysac.
  • I think everyone had a preconceived idea of what Bordeaux tastes like and overall, the whole group was fairly surprised by what we tasted.
  • We tried a different tasting process last night. We broke into groups of 3 people so that there could be more discussion about the wines. Our group is a little large for us to all taste at the same time and be able to really discuss. I think it worked pretty well for our first time trying it.

**All tasting notes about wines are taken from the research sheets that our members bring with them to the meetings, unless otherwise noted. This information was gathered from wine bottles, books, and online. I do not take credit for the tasting notes and do not guarantee the information is correct.**

all the little details

I thought it would help if I explain a little about how our group and how the whole thing works.

When we gather each month we have a business meeting, then tasting, then social time.

Each year, we choose someone to be in charge of "wine education". That person is responsible for picking out the theme of our tasting each month, and conducting the tasting.

There are 15 of us, so we are broken down into 3 wine groups. Each month one wine group is in charge of the wine. That way we aren't tasting way too many different wines.

There is a lot more to our group.. but those are the details about the wine-specific stuff. That should be enough to get us started, right?

We have our first meeting of 2010 tonight! We are learning about Bordeaux! Stay tuned to hear about what we tasted and what we thought.

New Wine Blog!

We have a wine club that was established back in 2006 with just five members. Many new members and MANY bottles of wine later, we are still going strong. This blog is a way to keep up with the wines we love, the wines we hate, and the wines we drink anyway. Cheers!
